Eco-Economy Indicators: BICYCLES and TRANSPORTATION - Resources from Earth Policy Institute

During the 1950s and 1960s, bicycle and automobile production were nearly equal. In the decades following, however, bike output soared, reaching 91 million in 1990, when car production totaled 36 million. Since then, with the exception of 1997 and 1998 (when output dropped to 90 million and then 87 million), about 100 million bikes have been produced each year.

Bicycles provide affordable transportation for billions of people. The infrastructure for bicycles—such as roads and parking facilities—is less expensive to build and less land-intensive than that for cars. Moreover, bicycles do not contribute to air or noise pollution, and they reduce traffic congestion. They also offer a chance for people to improve their physical fitness at a time when obesity is at record levels.

Minneapolis Ranks High AmongTwin Citiesg | MyFoxBike Commuters

MyFox Twin Cities | Minneapolis Ranks High Among Bike Commuters:

"Portland, Ore. is only U.S. city with more bike commuters

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minneapolis is full of green commuters, according to new U.S. Census numbers. The city is a national leader in the percentage of people who walk, bike and take public transit to work."

Minneapolis city leaders hope to maintain the city’s status as a bikeable and walkablecity by expanding the number of new bikeways and walking trails each year.

The cold weather is not a deterrent if the traffic management and safety are sufficient! Smaller cities of less than 50K could have half of trips by bicycle if they made it part of their plan. Much less expensive than more roads. Cuts sprawl. Makes cities more nice places to live and work and cheaper because cars and fuel needs are reduced accordingly. It's not rocket science, it's better.

AlterNet: Environment: Are U.S. Cities Ready For Bike-Sharing?

Copenhagen's then-new bike-sharing service. One glimpse and DeMaio was hooked. "The idea just blew me away," he says. "This was it."

DeMaio arranged to study in Denmark, where he absorbed as much about bike-sharing culture as possible. Convinced that the idea would appeal to Americans, he created MetroBike LLC, a bicycle planning and bike-sharing consulting company based in Washington D.C
